In 1995, Loyola became the first high school in the Mankato area to adopt varsity soccer.  Mankato East and Mankato West added varsity programs the following year.  Anticipating a growing demand for adult soccer officials, and with support from Dorothy McIntyre of the Minnesota State High School League, Peter Jarnstrom convened a meeting in 1996 at which a dozen local referees formed the Mankato Area Soccer Officials Association (MASOA).

High school soccer gradually spread to other communities in the region until, by 2007, MASOA served eleven schools.  To reflect these expanding responsibilities, the group changed its name to the South Central Minnesota Soccer Officials Association (SCMSOA).

As of 2021, we assign referees for fifteen schools.  Our members include more than fifty officials who live in and around SCMSOA’s service area.
