Our association’s story begins with the growth of youth soccer in the Mankato area during the 1980s and the formation of club teams for high school students in the early 1990s.  Loyola officially adopted high school soccer in 1995; Mankato East and West followed the next year.

Veteran referee Peter Jarnstrom anticipated a need for adult officials to serve these new programs.  He organized a meeting in the summer of 1996 at which a dozen local referees formed the Mankato Area Soccer Officials Association (MASOA).  Dorothy McIntyre of the Minnesota State High School League arranged training sessions and other support for the new group.

MASOA recruited, trained, assigned, and mentored more referees each year as high school soccer gradually spread to other communities in the area.  By 2007, MASOA served eleven schools and the group changed its name to the South Central Minnesota Soccer Officials Association (SCMSOA) to better reflect its regional focus.

SCMSOA has been affiliated with the Minnesota State High School League as a Charter/Legacy association for over twenty years.  We currently supply referees for fifteen schools in south central and southwestern Minnesota.  Our members include more than fifty officials who live in and around SCMSOA’s service area.
